Now that we’re approaching the Project 1 deadline, we’re excited to see all the completed projects coming in! Unfortunately, there was a site-wide edX issue that prevented all code submissions for all classes for about an hour, which in turn blocked the CS188.1x autograders. Because this prevented many of you from submitting Project 1 today, we’ve decided to extend the deadline by 24 hours. Project 1 is now due Monday, October 15th, at 11:59pm (in your local time). As a result, we are also extending the deadline for Homework 2; Homework 2 is now due Wednesday, October 17th, at 11:59pm.
We realize that there are many reasons that submissions can get delayed, whether it’s site problems or just life being unpredictable. As a result, we’ll be looking into whether there are good ways of making deadlines more flexible for future projects while still maintaining the pacing of the course.
Week 4 of CS188x: Artificial Intelligence is now live! To access the course materials, visit:

THIS WEEK: So far, we have thought about planning for agents that are alone in friendly, deterministic worlds. This week we’ll shake up our agents’ idyllic settings in two ways. First, we’ll consider the effect of adversaries -- other agents that are working against ours. Second, we’ll deal with uncertainty, where our actions can have multiple possible results and may even fail completely. Along the way, we’ll figure out what utilities actually are as we explore the foundations of decision theory.
This week’s timeline is as follows:
Project 1: Released two weeks ago (due Monday 10/15) Homework 2: Released last week (due Wednesday 10/17)
Lectures 6 and 7: Live now Homework 3: Live now (due Wednesday 10/24)
Project 2: Going out later this week (due Sunday 10/28)
As in past weeks, secondary video processing, which includes captioning, will release later in the week.
DEADLINE CHANGES: In response to your feedback, we’re making two changes to how we handle deadlines. First, to avoid time zone confusion, there will be a global deadline time. Starting with the Homework 2 deadline on Wednesday 10/17, all deadlines will be in the UTC-12 time zone. For most of you, this change will result in a small extension. Second, several discussion posts have requested the ability to keep exploring assignments after the official due dates. To enable this exploration while still keeping the class moving together as a group, we’re going to try the following: after each due date passes for a homework or project, we will post a practice version. The practice versions will not count towards your grade in the course, but will allow you to continue your exploration of the material on your own timeline.
COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: It has been exciting to see all the completed projects coming in and the great technical discussions about Project 1 and Homework 2 on the forums. We want to give all contributors a well-deserved pat on the back. We also want to highlight some of our biggest contributors of the past week: rdh, CarbonTwelve, and Biki23, and our team of community TA’s, ichaleynbin, PoorCoco, BayAreaRon, and kevinsallee.
As you work through the homeworks and projects, we encourage you to continue taking advantage of the forums. They are there to help connect with the staff and with your classmates, so don't be shy about getting involved (though, as always, please do avoid spoilers in your posts until after due dates have passed).
